According to Dr. Fraser Mustard, a leading authority on child development, "the lack of readiness in the primary years can doom children to years of struggle in school." He adds that "while schools are the best place for parenting programs and early childhood education, it is virtually impossible for schools to help a child who is struggling at the end of Grade 1 since so much of a child's development is carried out in the first six years of life." (Toronto Star, November 22, 2003) Studies have shown - and many elementary teachers will corroborate - that children who have attended Montessori pre-schools are typically well ahead of those children entering JK and SK classes without the benefit of such a start.
